“THE RIGHT OF CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES TO VOTE SHALL NOT BE DENIED OR ABRIDGED BY THE UNITED STATES OR BY ANY STATE ON ACCOUNT OF SEX.”
AMENDMENT XIX, AUGUST 26, 1920

Passed by Congress in June 1919, and ratified in August 1920, the 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote in the United States

  • The 72 year-long fight for the right for women to vote in the U.S. started in 1848 at the first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York
  • The amendment was finally first introduced in Congress in 1878
  • Champions of voting rights for women worked tirelessly, using tactics including parades, silent vigils, and hunger strikes to reach their goal, and often being met by fierce resistance
  • On May 21, 1919, the House of Representatives passed the amendment
  • 2 weeks later, the Senate followed
  • Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment on August 18, 1920, and the amendment passed its final hurdle of obtaining the agreement of three-fourths of the states
  • Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby certified the ratification on August 26, 1920

Today, more than 68 million women vote in elections because of those who never gave up the fight for equality.
